X. Measuring Design Effectiveness

Overview of the material and concepts learned this month.

Connecting/Synthesizing/ Transforming

in this month’s course, the focus was to measure the effectiveness of the BoxPark Sushi brand. To measure the effectiveness of the brand, I conducted a survey via Google Forms and ask questions about the palette, age group, logo appearance, and more to see what the audience think or how they felt about BoxPark Sushi. Once I gathered results from the survey, I created an infographic that consists of the information gathered from the survey. In the infographic, I used striking, and engaging visuals to communicate the information clearly and quickly

Generating the questions for the survey was the most complicated but was very informative. Demographics and age range do play a part in the whole branding process, but my goal was to be more versatile with the questions instead of focusing on the demographics and the age range. I was really surprised at the number of respondents who respond to the survey because of the more respondents, the validity of the test increases. Once I generated the survey, I automatically sent it to my close friends and on social media (Facebook). Within 24 hours, I had 36 respondents. A few hours later, it sparked up to 70 respondents.

Problem Solving

A design problem that needed to be solved was communicating the results utilizing the BoxPark Sushi brand in the most effective way possible. Primarily, I had a hard time trying to figure out how to communicate the brand through an infographic since I had never done an infographic before. A solution was to seek inspiration online and referring back to the peer review to figure out the direction of the infographic. I used the brand colors, textures, and fonts in the infographic to better communicate the overall look and feel of the brand and communicate the data with copy.

Innovative Thinking

A bar graph is used to compare things between different groups or track changes over time. While looking at the results from the survey, they were mainly circle graphs. In the last question in the survey, which was to determine the age group I went on and created a palm tree graphic instead of creating a regular bar graph. I created the bar graph on InDesign, which was easier for me, and made sure the palm trees were on the correct location. The palm trees on the bar graph made it not just innovative, but eye-catching and engaging to read.

Acquiring Competencies

  1. Surveys. Questionnaire with the intention of gathering data from a set of respondents. (Occupational, Technical)
  2. Infographics. Collection of imagery, charts and text that gives an simple overview of a topic. (Technical, Occupational)
  3. Data Visualization. Translating information into a visual context. (Technical, Academic)
  4. Qualitative. Observable insight. (Technical, Occupational)
  5. Quantitative. Based on stats and factual numbers. (Technical, Occupational)
  6. Hierarchy of Needs. five stages of human needs that motivate our behavior within a pyramid. (Academic, Technical)
  7. Design Staircase. Measuring the profitability of a design to a company. (Conceptual, Academic)
  8. Hard Values. Tangible values and can be easily measured(Academic, Conceptual)
  9. Soft Values. Intangible and cannot be measured. (Academic, Conceptual)
  10. Demographics. Consumer’s physical attributes; race, age, sex, etc. (Occupational, Conceptual)
  11. Psychographics. Consumer’s behavior. Internal thoughts and motivations to do something. (Occupational, Conceptual)
  12. Being Proactive. Make it happen instead of waiting for them to happen to you. (Occupational, Conceptual)

In this course, I learned how to measure the success of a design project. Not only that, I have to be proactive especially in the field of design. What I mean by that is making it happen instead of waiting for them to happen to you. Even though I have not created an infographic before in my design career, this course helps me broaden my skills as a designer and helped me become versatile with what I do. I understood that creating an infographic was important to easily grasp a lot of information and using the right color, negative space, typography, and more, information can be transformed into eye-catching, memorable, and persuasive graphics.
