Annotated Bibliography

Freelancers vs. in-house staff vs. agencies. (2019, March 11). Advisable.

This article discusses the pros and cons of hiring an in-house, a marketing agency, or hiring a freelance talent for your business. There are factors affecting choice of marketing hire. These factors are cost, control & management, capabilities & expertise, quality of results, flexibility, reliability, legal security, communication, motivation & mindset, and internal facing projects. The author of the article prefers to hire freelancers because they are not as expensive as an agency or in-house talent. Freelancers are the new wave because they are eager, motivated, and strive to outdo themselves so they can keep getting more work. At the same time, they want their freedom. Freelance designers are your best bet for one-time design projects. In the long run, hiring freelancers might be a burden.

The purpose of this paper was to examine the impact of the factors that stimulate inspiration in the design process. As we know when we start working on a project, we look at websites that gives us inspiration to start working during the design process. There were three factors that were summed up: knowledge, knowledge relations, and innovative strategies. Those three factors were extracted from the International Patent Classification (IPC). The experiment started off with 40 undergraduate students that were divided in to five groups. One group was the control group with no materials and the other four groups were given the three factors. The subjects were asked to create sketches of a coin-sorting device. By comparing the control group with the other four groups, they observed that the verb knowledge had a significant impact on simulating inspiration and the students that lacked experience had a negative impact on inspiration.

Long, G. J., & De Milto, L. (2012). From Part-time to Full-time Freelance: A Proven Strategy for Success. AMWA Journal: American Medical Writers Association Journal, 27(1), 29–32.

Coming from a medical sense, the authors of this article discuss their experiences freelancing–building their successful business by transitioning from part-time to full-time freelancing. Topics include marketing yourself from part-time to full-time freelancing, benefits of working for a company while launching a business, similarities and differences of full-time and part-time freelancing, deciding whether or not part-time freelancing is the right choice, and many more. While the authors started working on their business, they’ve become more confident. Long stated that her learning how to run and market a business was successful for her because she had steady clients, thus some income, and the marketing strategy to do something she thought about doing for a long time.

Mastery Journal Week 1

MDM570 Week 1 Mastery Journal

Abstract:

This section of the mastery journal explains the knowledge and the outcomes gained in the first week of class utilizing the four degree learning outcomes: Connecting, Synthesizing & Transforming, Solving Problems, Innovative Thinking, and Acquiring Competencies. Motion graphics, utilizing Adobe Premiere Pro for our first week design challenge, design employment organizations from different perspectives and the design case study about the ideal home for Wounded Warriors are also discussed in this section.

Connecting, Synthesizing, Transforming

During the first week of the course, the class were introduced to a program that most of us were familiar and not familiar with: Adobe Premiere Pro. The program is mainly used for video editing and producing high-quality videos. As a person that is not familiar with Premiere Pro, it is something that needs to be added to the repertoire. Jeremy Cox stated, “It is a medium, that combines graphic design, in motion, with all these different elements put together” (Cox, 2014). It is vital that we need to learn new skills in order to stand out from the competition.

With the research (design employment organizations) that was conducted, there were pros and cons from each organization and also utilizing design as inspiration for any design process. According to advisable, if you are deciding whether to hire a freelancer, an agency, or an in-house, they prefer hiring a freelancer because they are capable to execute work compared to in-house or an agency. They do everything they can to provide work every time (Advisable, 2019). These three employment organizations also have benefits. According to Genevieve Long, PhD “If starting freelance part-time, you will have time set aside startup funds” (Long, 2012).

Solving Problems

The problem of the case study “Designing the Ideal Home for Wounded Warriors” was to provide affordable housing to Wounded Warriors (veterans) who meet or exceed the ADA standards, their physical and mental needs. One of their solutions that was presented in the case study was social privacy. According to the case study, “people want to view their homes as a sanctuary, retreat, a place of privacy and introspection” (Case Study, 2011) people want to be rest in their own homes, and have a great time inside the home, making it therapeutic. This is where visible and Invisible security comes into play as well. Because of the events that they been through during their time in the military, it can cause a lot of trauma and combat stress. Those issues make it hard for them to feel safe and secure. They can utilize a home security system to keep their property and the people inside it safer. Harm may come in the form of a burglary, home invasion, fire, flood, or other environmental disaster, and most home security systems can monitor for all of these. (Tuohy, 2020).

Motion would definitely elevate this project as it will bring a lot of emphasis and dynamic to the presentation and it will transform complex ideas in an understandable way. According to Krasner, “The process of sequencing in motion graphics can provide visual rhythm, enhance narrative, create emotions, and enable you to construct and restructure time and space” (Krasner, 2008).

Innovative Thinking

In the case study “Designing the Ideal Home for Wounded Warriors”, designers need to research. It is very important to research the soldier’s needs, and what they are capable of, rehabilitation spaces, things like that to keep the ball rolling when executing the project. Identifying the target audience is important. “To successfully define your target audience, you need to know who they are, what they are seeking, and why they are seeking it. While it may sound obvious, it takes deep thought and research to get it right” (TC Creatives, 2017).

The work presented show innovative thinking because they didn’t present one duality; they showed seven dualities that gave the design team inspiration for developing a home for their physical, mental and emotional needs based on everyone’s stories.

Acquiring Competencies

Adobe Premiere Pro. mainly used for video editing and producing high-quality videos, motion graphics (Occupational I will be utilizing this in the industry, Technical because this is a video-editing software.)

Design employment organizations (in-house, freelance, agency). I know the similarities and differences between the three and when I am ready to become a professional and apply for a job, I will know the differences between the three instead of applying anywhere. (Occupational because it pertains to my occupation which is graphic design, Conceptual because these three words are also terminologies.)

Synthesis Matrix. A table that organizes research and see where the main idea overlaps. (Academic because this is used in graduate school for research, Technical because this is considered a tactic for research purposes.)

3 areas of learning you are taking away that you didn’t know prior to this week and prior to the design challenge.:

  • Adobe Premiere Pro
  • Motion Graphics
  • Diegetic/Non-diegetic
